Get some exercise, explore the city and meet locals . . . by bike! Starting May 12, Montréal will have a brand new public bike system that will make it that much easier for tourists – and Montrealers – to take a spin around town. Get the goods on this fun travel option…

For only $5 a day plus an hourly fee*, you can pick up a bike at any one of the 300 BIXI stations scattered about town. It’s easy. Just swipe your credit card in the solar-powered station and type in the code to unlock your BIXI bike. When you’re done with the bike, simply return it to the station closest to your destination.

This is great news, considering Montréal is one of North America’s most cyclist-friendly cities. I took a BIXI bike for a ride on Monday and put together a little video of my favourite bike routes in Montreal! A definite must-see!

Lachine Canal: I personally love biking on the Lachine Canal near the Atwater Market, a perfect place to stop and grab a bite—if you do stop there, make sure to stop at Pizza Ancora, it’s the best pizzeria in town!

Jean-Drapeau Park: A great destination if you want to spend the day outdoors and enjoy some peace of mind. Not only can you bike on the famous F1 Gilles Villeneuve track, but you can also stop in for a dip at the Jean-Drapeau beach, get a nice tan, or simply nap in the sand.

Maisonneuve Boulevard: If you’re looking to explore the downtown area, this separate bike path runs along Maisonneuve Boulevard, a main throughfare. You’ll be steps away from popular Ste-Catherine Boulevard and to other great attractions, such as the Museum of Fine Arts on Sherbrooke Boulevard.

Finally, cycling enthusiasts should stop in at La Maison des Cyclistes on Rachel for more information on the 500 km of bike routes that run through Montreal.

* Sorry folks, I was originally told that it was only $5 a day, but I’ve since learned that there’s also a small hourly fee on top of that!

- By pashmina 10-11-09 at 9:29 AM I recently got back from London where they have a similar scheme in place, and the number of people cycling around town has just gone through the roof. I'm not sure if the cycle stations are solar powered, but the bikes are available on a pay as you play basis, without the flat upfront charge. It's a great idea.... as long as there are enough bike lanes.
