The Magic of Lanterns at Montreal’s Botanical Gardens is one of my favourite ways to celebrate fall in the city. Imagine walking through the most stunning Chinese garden at night, surrounded by more than 700 colourful lanterns, with the sounds of traditional Chinese instruments in the fresh autumn breeze. Just the top of Montreal’s Olympic Stadium rising through the trees is there to remind you that you are right in the heart of the city!

Truly, I can’t hide my enthusiasm for the Magic of Lanterns annual event. If you’re planning a trip to Montreal between September 11 and November 1, it’s the place to be, whether you’re alone or with your girlfriends, husband or children. Regardless of your age, you’ll be amazed at the vibrant colours and glowing lights.

Now, before you slip into a sweater and head out the door, here are a few insider tips for making the most of your evening at the lanterns:
• As I mentioned in the video, every Thursday evening, the Montreal Planetarium will be setting up telescopes for you to brush up on your astronomy skills. After all, this year’s theme is Chinese Astronomy.• Don’t forget to visit the Tower of Condensing Clouds in the CHINESE GARDEN, since that’s where you’ll be able to listen to some fine traditional Chinese instruments, including the zheng, pipa, yangqin, erhu and suona.• Bring your camera! This stunning setting offers some pretty unique photo opportunities!
