  • YOU DO TIFFANY. WE DO BIRKS

    Posted by

Birks is to Montrealers what Tiffany was to Holly Golightly: a symbol of elegance, grace and perfect happiness. When I was a little girl, I used to love staring at those perfect little BLUE BIRKS BOXES in my mother’s bedroom.
I can also remember standing on my tippy toes at Phillips Square, trying to peek through the windows of this iconic Montreal institution, a beautiful ochre-coloured heritage building and Birks’ legendary flagship store.
Some twenty years later, when I was invited to the launch of Jennifer Heil’s new jewellery line by FASHION Magazine, I thought to myself, well, this is definitely one of the perks of being all grown up. I get an insider’s view of one of the most glamorous jewellery stores in Montreal, which would make any grown woman feel like that dreamy little child again….
The picture you see below is the creation of 2006 Gold medalist and reigning Olympic champion in freestyle mogul skiing, Jennifer Heil. Like many other women, she has many talents, and her commitment to excellence has led her to design a collection of contemporary bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings in silver, exclusively for BIRKS.
What I love about this necklace is, undoubtedly, what it represents. The centrepiece is the main ring that holds all the other rings and it represents a dream. Then the other four rings, suspended on delicate chains, flow out of the centre, symbolizing the fulfillment of that dream. The middle ring, with its woven texture, represents teamwork, while the others symbolize focus, courage, and finally, the joy that comes from achieving your dream.
When it comes down to it, it’s basically a beautiful, elegant reminder of the determination and motivation it takes to get out there everyday and go and kick some ass – definitely more exciting  than the reminders I have scheduled in my BlackBerry! And you know what else is so enjoyable about this whole experience?
Shopping at Birks of course! The 1879 heritage building has as much soul as James Brown himself. In fact, it always amazes me to see structures like these, still standing after all these years, in the heart of downtown Montreal. It’s a silent yet concrete reminder of all the love stories of the thousands of people who have passed through their doors over the years.
So now you can dream with me. Have a look at the PICTURES OF THE EVENT, including this FAB PHOTO of the Olympic athlete from Alberta now turned designer living in Montreal.  Jennifer Heil is on the left, with FASHION Magazine’s Editor-in-chief, Bernadette Morra is on the right.

It's also so profound how you can be entrenched in cosmopolitan life and minutes later be surrounded by nature...and those clouds; there's no clouds like the ones over Montreal--surreal and oh so beautiful. Taking the most beautiful place in Montreal, the Old Port, and using it as a backdrop to Montreal's other beautiful feature: the people!
