  • FESTIVAL DU NOUVEAU CINEMA: NIGHTLIFE PICKS

    Posted by

The Festival du Nouveau Cinéma de Montréal (FNC) kicks off its 38th edition on October 7th to the 18th. With 48 countries showcasing more than 250 films, many of them in Montreal’s downtown core, there’s something for everyone, no matter your cinematic bent. Since this is a nightlife blog, however, I’ve circled a couple things that would be of interest to people like us…

My focus when it comes to the arts-related writing is music, but I do occasionally dabble in the area of film criticism. However, because the dabbling is entirely occasional, when I’m assigned a film to review it generally falls within the Matthew McConaughey or Jack Black cinematic canon. So, for our purposes, I’ll keep to what I know best…

Sines and Wonders: This is an evening inspired by an FNC-premiering film, the Kara Blake documentary, The Delian Mode, about the pioneering English electronic music artist, Delia Derbyshire. Multi-disciplinary artists and musicians like Nicole Lizée, Lynne Trépanier (and Blake herself), plus DJs Lynne T (aka Trépanier, from Lesbians on Ecstasy) and Patti Schmidt will be using Derbyshire’s music as a starting point from which to look at and dance to the evolution of electronic music over the last half decade.

October 10th (Agora Hydro-Québec du Coeur des Sciences de l’UQÀM. 175 President Kennedy Street)

All Tomorrow’s Parties: The Film: A DIY film about All Tomorrow’s Parties, which is an alternative music festival curated by a different artist every year, located on the coast of England. Less a documentary than a musically-obsessed collage, the film is comprised of fan footage and performances by musicians like Belle And Sebastian, Sonic Youth, Portishead, GZA, Patti Smith and way, way more. October 13th (Agora)

Montreal film co-op, Cinéma Abattoir, presents “Love and Terrorism”, an evening of everything experimental. 16mm and Super-8mm video will meld with the equally unhinged music of Karl Lemieux & Hyena Hive, Influx LASN, Dark Xenakiss and some surprise guests. October 15th (Agora)

Taqwacore Muslim Punk Blow Out is the appropriately awesome name of the North American premiere of the documentary, Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam. This incredible-looking film follows a band of Muslim punks as they tour and play the U.S. and Pakistan, opening eyes (and kicking the shins) of all sort of people along the way. Film-only premiere: October 8 (Imperial Cinema), Taqwacore Muslim Punk Blow Out: October 8 (Agora)

Fests of any kind always have great parties and the FNC is no exception: October 7th, opening night, has music from Otarie and DJ Why? Alex Why? with things wrapping up on the 17th with always entertaining and eclectic, Bonobo. Check the FNC website for more details…
