LADY GAGA IN MONTREAL

When Lady Gaga kicks off her world tour in Montreal on November 27th at the Bell Centre, the world will be watching. In just a few short years, this pint-sized singer has become one of the most famous musicians in the world and this tour will, no doubt, dominate the entertainment media in each one of the 16 cities she plays. As a blogger, I’m fairly confident that I could just write “Lady Gaga” 50 times in a row and this would still end up being one of my most read posts…

Lady Gaga presents a bit of a conundrum for the serious music lover. It would be hard to argue that she writes Leonard Cohen-like lyrics, as this very funny clip of Christopher Walken performing Poker Face illustrates. Her music exists within the fairly narrow confines of dance-oriented pop, but she works those boundaries well and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to occasionally catching myself singing the chorus from Paparazzi. Even the most cynical among us should have trouble denying that she has turned herself into a nearly critic-proof performer with a finger firmly on the cultural zeitgeist’s pulse. No wonder those Madonna comparisons keep coming up. She has become such an incredibly branded phenomenon that it’s sometimes hard to believe that, as the video below demonstrates, she was once just another struggling singer-songwriter. (Entirely fitting, however, that the song she’s singing is all about ambition.) And really, who else could turn a press conference, often the most boring of all press activities, into THIS. For this reason, I will be attending whatever wacky media event she has here in Montreal and will be quick with the video footage.

Gaga’s North American tour is called The Monster Ball and will be, in her words, “the first-ever ‘pop electro opera’”. Never one to miss a marketing opportunity, Gaga, just days before her show in Montreal, is releasing The Fame Monster, which is basically her debut album with 8 new tracks added. One of which is Bad Romance and it’s a perfect example of what Lady Gaga is to me: so cool that it’s probably ok that it doesn’t actually make much sense.

Opening up the show are two great acts: Semi-Precious Weapons and Kid Cudi. And despite what you may have heard, you can still get Lady Gaga in Montreal Tickets.
