If you’re here for Mutek, Jazz Fest or Just for Laughs, expect to spend most of your time downtown. Montréal festival season brings out thousands of locals and visitors who converge on the incredible (and often free) outdoor shows and the packed-with-life terrasses (or patios) that are bustling from morning to night. In short, Montréal in the summer is a city that lives outside. And while there’s no shortage of things to do downtown, it’s sometimes nice to grab a quick breather before heading back into the crowds.
If you’re in town for Pop Montréal or Suoni Per Il Popolo, much of your time will be spent in and around the Plateau Mont-Royal and its northerly neighbour, Mile End. The Plateau has no shortage of places worthy of your attention – the absinthe shots at Billy Kun are a must-drink (I’d stop at 3).
Close at hand are great dance spots like Karma Club , Academy and the always eclectic Club Lambi. Wander up St-Laurent to Sala Rosa and its across-the-street neighbour Casa del Popolo for great food and some of the best live music in the city. Next morning, try the full English breakfast at the new it-spot The Sparrow. Then spend a coffee-bagel-people-watching afternoon on St-Viateur Street.
If you’re in town for Osheaga, you’re going to have to get to know Montréal’s (easily navigable) metro system, as it’s the most efficient way to get to Parc Jean-Drapeau, the festival site.
