Mount Royal—or the “the mountain” as people here fondly refer to it—is Montrealers’ preferred playground. And whether you’re exploring it by foot or by bike, its lush green expanses will reveal a treasure trove of discoveries.
To access the park, take Olmsted Road off of Parc Avenue. Pedestrians and cyclists share this wide, tree-lined path, whose leafy branches are home to an impressive variety of bird species. If you arrive on a Sunday, you’ll be greeted by a crowd of drummers and dancers, who set up at the base of the George-Étienne Cartier statue, for the weekly tam-tam get-together
From the base to the top, be prepared for a steady but gentle climb up. Take your time enjoying the mountain’s many bucolic charms before stopping at the Kondiaronk lookout. From here, downtown unfolds at your feet, while the grand St. Lawrence River ripples in the distance. Behind you is the chalet du Mont-Royal, a lovely French beaux-arts-style building.
The delectable aromas of Mediterranean food wafting in the air might lead you to the bistro at the nearby Beaver Lake Pavilion. The pavilion also offers rentals, so you can either rollerblade around the lake or enjoy a leisurely ride by pedal boat.
On your way up to the lookout, you’ll come across the Smith House, the mountain’s meeting point par excellence. This history-rich house has played a pivotal role in the mountain’s conservation efforts and its café makes an excellent place to stop and stretch your legs.
You can prolong your visit a little longer with a visit to the Mount Royal or the Notre-Dame- des-neiges cemeteries, two oases of beauty and tranquility that are ideal for a leisurely stroll or some quiet contemplation. Ask for a guided tour of the area and learn where many famous Montrealers are buried.
