The lighting in Old Montréal was specially designed to showcase the architectural details of the neighbourhood’s centuries-old buildings. And when the warm glow of light mingles with the building’s natural tones, the result is an absolutely stunning showcase of architectural styles.
By foot is the best way to discover the area’s many treasures, although clip-clopping along in a calèche recreates an authentic feel. To add to the enchanting atmosphere, a total of 22 gas lamps were installed on Sainte-Hélène Street; over the years, this charming strip has served as backdrop for many different movies.
From the centre of Place d’Armes, a bronze figure of Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve and founder of Montréal, keeps a watchful eye on the gorgeous architectural medley surrounding him. When dusk approaches, the Notre-Dame Basilica becomes enveloped in blue, and dominates the square with its majestic presence.
