Right in the heart of downtown Montréal, the Edwardian era is alive and well, thanks to the café-bistro Alexandre et fils. Patrons go there for its elegant décor, reminiscent of early 20th-century Parisian brasseries, for its gourmet menu crafted by a guest chef or for its house menu, whose mouth-watering selections include cassoulet, confit, sauerkraut, grilled meats and fishes, accompanied by an excellent selection of vintages.

When happy hour hits (here, we call it our 5 à 7), everyone heads upstairs for a pint imported from across the pond—Ireland, Scotland, England, Holland and France, or from closer to home—Québec and Ontario. The ambiance is much like an authentic English pub and doors stay open every day of the week, until 2 in the morning. During the month of June, the Grand Prix’s black-and-white chequered flags fly from the awning of the café-bistro, so for Formula 1 fans, it’s a great place to celebrate fast cars and speed at the heart of the Peel Street action.
