Published on November 2, 2009 – Did you know that in the old days, glass prisms (known as vault or sidewalk lights) were set into sidewalks in order to allow light into underground vaults or basements? Well, it is never too late to learn something new and never too early to get to it, especially since next year you’ll have many great opportunities to learn more about this fascinating material.

In a move towards transparency, twenty-three Montréal museums will unite with numerous art galleries and libraries to proclaim 2010 as the Year of Glass.

This luminous and crystalline year will feature a multitude of exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations dedicated to glass, as well as original creations from a group of Montréal fashion designers working in collaboration with artisan glassblowers!

Categorized into four themes – art, architecture, history and science - glass, in its many forms and uses, will be the focus of numerous exhibitions and conferences, as well as a professional congress that will bring together artists of international renown.  An exhibition of none other than Louis C. Tiffany at the Museum of Fine Arts, stained glass window demonstrations at the Château Dufresne Museum, glass and the solar house at the Biosphère, are but a few of the myriad of activities scheduled throughout the year.

“If man doesn’t possess the power to shape the world to his liking, then he can at least tailor the lenses through which he sees it” With these inspirational words from Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, we wish you an excellent year of Glass in Montréal!
