With an art event as exciting as this, it’s going to be hard to wait three years for the next one.

This first edition of The Québec Triennial: Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed is one of the largest in the history of the Musée d’art contemporain. And from all accounts, it’s a ground-breaker. For the first time ever, the MAC’s team of curators has assembled the works of 38 artists and collectives, showcasing a total of 135 works to give us a snapshot—more like a gigantic group photo—of the movers and shakers, the mavericks and the up-and-comers of Québec’s contemporary art scene.

You don’t need to be a die-hard devotee of contemporary art to appreciate the Triennial because this inaugural edition offers everyone something to chew on. For the first time ever, the MAC has devoted every single one of its galleries to showcase this vast collection of insightful, probing and out-of-the-ordinary works. There’s a rich range of media on display—drawing, installation, painting, performance, photography, sculpture and video—in a nutshell, something for every taste. And with this major new exhibition, Montréal reaffirms that Québec’s art scene is alive and kicking and doing very well indeed today.
