Published on November 2, 2009 – With such an extraordinary background - 16 fashion schools, 16 diplomas, a unique expertise in embroidery, textile arts, silkscreen printing, and make-up - it’s no wonder that Helmer Joseph is a designer unlike any other. Already well immersed into the world of fashion at not even ten years of age, he was wooed by the greatest names on the planet. Christian Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, Louis Vuitton and Balmain utilized his great skill as a couturier for many years until it was time for him to return home, but not before being honoured by Bernadette Chirac in person.
His creations – some even in plastic, a material which he feels produces a crystal effect – make heads turn, and with reason! His hand-knit sweaters are works of art, his three-dimensional, spiral and cube designs are exquisite and his patchwork collection is a veritable hymn to colour and texture.
A bit of advice to those who like to buck the trend and, as said by the designer himself, “refuse to surrender to fashion uniformity”: his new gallery-boutique at 2020 Saint Laurent opened its doors last September…
