27 years young, with a devastating smile, Erin Mahoney is more or less a common creature who lives the Montréal lifestyle in the spirit of Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde. By day she studies classical cuisine; by night, you can find her behind the bar at Coda and Tokyo, two of the most frequented hotspots on Saint-Laurent Boulevard.
Her evenings often begin at Baldwin Barmacie on Laurier Street. It’s the kind of place where one cocktail at happy hour can easily turn into a marathon session that stretches into the night.
Coda reminds her of a legal loft party hidden away above a photocopy shop and it’s one of her preferred post-happy hour spots. Upon arrival, one has the feeling of being ushered into a secret venue – and thank god you found it, what with the never-ending string of top-notch local and international DJs (among the best along the Main).
As the night wears on, it’s off to Blizzarts, a narrow stretch punctuated by comfy booths, a packed bar and a cozy dance floor just beyond. It’s a potent combo that makes for some wild times, and keeps Erin going until the staff politely asks her to leave at closing time.
Erin is also a big follower of any event put on by the Peer Pressure collective, the Montreal crew that puts on some of the craziest and most-attended events in the city, whether we’re talking a DJ night or an underground band. The real show, however, is the party itself, as their nights tend to draw the most entertaining guests.
Wednesday to Sunday, Tokyo is the place to be for a solid night of dancing, laughing and toasting friends new and old. Two rooms mean two vibes, while the terrace out back can easily accommodate one hundred plus patrons. It’s often packed until 3 a.m., at which time the focus shifts to a pre-bedtime poutine.
