Romance

Overwhelmed by the candlelight, the music, and the romance of the moment, I screamed “YES!” from every pore.

And that is how I succumbed to the chocolate mousse in a quaint little bistro in Old Montréal. Little did I know that a similar response, but to an entirely different question, was soon to follow.

After a luxurious start to our morning that included fresh croissants and steaming cafés au lait, we had spent the day wandering: up on the mountain for a sun-dappled picnic, then back downtown for a festival show, over to a nearby terrace to soak up some sun followed by an intimate horse-drawn carriage ride along Old Montréal’s quixotic cobblestone streets. The best part? We hadn’t planned a minute of it.

With opportunities for spontaneity as limitless as the stars above, Montréal makes falling in love easy. Whether it’s a fresh, budding affection or a seasoned love affair, you’ll get caught up in the magic of it all: just think of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who spontaneously wed here in 1964.

Our evening agenda included dinner for two—the chocolate mousse was sublime—then we wandered out again. We had toyed with the idea of a starlit cruise, but decided to check out a hot little jazz club in which to cozily sit back and drink in Montréal’s relaxed vibe instead.

But suddenly there we were, atop Mount Royal under a star-studded canopy, gazing out at the illuminated city skyline. And I screamed “YES!” for the second time that night, but this time for a ring instead of dessert.
