Montrealers don’t just think of the bicycle as a fun and practical way of getting around: they see it as a life essential. And they’re pretty passionate about their pedaling. So much so, that the city has dedicated seven whole days to this two-wheeled mode of transportation.

In fact, each year, rain or shine, the festive Féria du vélo invites thousands of cyclists to take part in a host of activities. Kicking off the action is the Défi métropolitain, which gives visitors a chance to discover the Greater Montréal region over several hundred kilometers (minus any race pressure) in the company of thousands of others.

For a taste of Montréal’s electric nights, you might want to try the Tour la nuit, which covers more than 20 kilometers of car-free streets. Lastly, the legendary Tour de l’Île, which celebrates its 25 anniversary this year, is probably the best way for any tourist to explore the city’s many different neighborhoods in a family-oriented and fun-loving ambiance.

As the saying goes, when in Rome, you do as the Romans do, so when in Montréal, hop on the saddle and ride your way to a refreshing and lasting impression of the city.
