May 2, 2013 ─ Centaur Theatre was created in the late 1960s to bring English-language theatre to Montréal. Since then, this audacious troupe and its performance space have presented the world premieres of nearly twenty plays by Montréal playwrights, as diverse as the city itself. It has also presented numerous French-language Québec plays in dynamic English adaptations.
Focusing on the present day, the Centaur is devoted to presenting a remarkably varied drama repertoire, always closely tied to the human experience. This English Montréal institution also keeps an eye open to the world, drawing on audacious creations from around the globe. While its main mission is to present powerful works by artists from Québec and elsewhere in Canada, it is also making a name for itself on the world stage.
Audiences of all ages will find something to enjoy in the Centaur’s diverse programme. Little ones will be delighted by the well-loved Saturday morning children’s series. Adult audiences flock to the Wildside festival, presenting the work of seven independent theatre companies. The Centaur also chooses and performs the best English-language play at the madcap Montreal FRINGE Festival. On top of all this, the theatre is the English-language ambassador for that monument of Québec theatre, Michel Tremblay (Les Belles-Sœurs, Albertine en cinq temps, etc).
Both Anglophones and English-speaking Francophones will find something to love at the Centaur. Come and watch the theatre take flight!
