September 30, 2013 ─ A completely unique cultural event. An unmissable date on the fall cultural calendar. Montréal’s most intimate anti-festival. Speed-dating sessions between talent recruiters, agents for up-and-coming artists, specialized journalists and other music industry dynamos. A showcase for professionals and a feast for music-lovers. M for music. M for metropolis of international culture. M for marvellous. M for Montréal.
Launched in 2006 by Montrealer Sebastian Nasra, in collaboration with legendary promoter Martin Elbourne (former agent for The Smiths and New Order and founder of WOMAD with Peter Gabriel), M for Montréal’s main mission is to show off Montréal’s up-and-coming musical acts. It’s an amazing opportunity for musicians and music-lovers alike. For the former, it’s a golden opportunity to get heard and get signed; for the latter, it’s a chance to see young musicians with their pedal to the metal. And with 40 acts in just three days, completists will have to step on it as well.
Like any good festival that isn’t content to rest on its laurels and do the same thing every year, M for Montréal is putting plenty of effort into building ties internationally. With its M sur la route program, it now takes part in seven high-profile international festivals, including South by Southwest (Austin, Texas), The Great Escape (Brighton, UK) and Festival Les Inrocks (Paris). Likewise, Mundial Montréal aims to celebrate Canada’s cultural richness with national and international tours. The festival’s also brought us Mini-M, M ton Quartier and M pour Midi. Just that many more reasons to say Montréal, je t’M!
