Published on April 27, 2009 - Maybe it’s been a while since you last hauled out the clubs, but with the scent of spring in the air, now’s the time to start sharpening your swing. Here’s a peek at some courses in and around Montréal worth discovering.

For inner city golfers, Montréal’s Municipal Golf club, just east of Parc Maisonneuve, offers a nine-hole course, May to November, weather-permitting. It also features practice greens, private or group lessons, equipment rentals and The First Tee program for kids, so you can bring along your little Tiger-Woods-in-the-making.
Drive east and you’ll reach the Métropolitain Anjou Golf Club, created by world-class golf architect Graham Cooke and Associates. Perfect your stroke on The Championship (18-hole) and The Executive (18-hole, Par-3), two challenging courses featuring huge lakes, ponds and—everybody’s favourite—sand bunkers! At the far east end of the island, you can enjoy the spectacular greenery and dunes of the Club de golf de l’île de Montréal, whose Parcours de l’Irlande will have your Irish eyes smiling.

Head west to swing the sticks at the Royal Montréal Golf Club, North America’s oldest golf club, which was founded in 1873. The club boasts three courses: The Blue, The Red and The Dixie. Golfing greats such as Jack Nicklaus, Mike Weir and Tiger Woods himself treated crowds to thrilling matches during The Presidents Cup, held on the world-class Blue Course in September 2007.

If you’re in the mood for a drive outside the city Mont-Tremblant Ski Resort treats guests to red-sand bunkers, glens and gorgeous fairways on its Le Diable or Le Géant courses as they soak up the surrounding beauty of the Laurentians.

From August 17 to 23, golf fans will be flocking to the Saint-Raphaël Golf Club for the Montréal Open, a 72-hole stroke play tournament that has the distinction of being the Canadian Tour Players Championship, and one of the country’s premier golf happenings.

Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned golfer, Montréal has something for all levels of players. See you this summer on the green!
