January 21, 2014 — Montréal is recognized as a world leader and pioneer when it comes to sustainable solutions, which also extends to architecture. The city is home to three shining examples of green structural design: La Tohu, the Maison du développement durable and the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium.

La Tohu
La Tohu is a creation and performance centre erected upon a former landfill site that has garnered numerous awards in both architecture and sustainable development. From its green rooftops, biogas heating system, recycled building materials throughout to its geothermal power and ice bunker to regulate interior temperature, the LEED GOLD certified Pavilion showcases environmental consideration in every square inch of its design.

Maison du développement durable
Built as an example of what green architecture should be, the Maison du développement durable boasts LEED Platinum certification and outstanding performance, striving to strike a balance between its occupants’ well-being and its environmental impact through considerate environmental and social initiatives. This innovative design was achieved through an integrated effort by a multi-disciplinary design team and features a green roof, raised floors, geothermal wells, waterless and low flow plumbing plus a living wall.

Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium
This highly original building integrates cutting-edge energy efficiency measures and inventive space design. Fully compliant with LEED certification standards, 75% of the Planetarium was constructed from recycled material. Its impressive environmental component features a number of energy-saving measures, such as a partially green rooftop, optimized lighting systems, natural ventilation and thermal insulation, low flow plumbing and rainwater irrigation.
