Mountain this, mountain that. I had to get to the bottom (or maybe the top?) of this Montréal phenomenon.
The mighty Mount Royal was seemingly all I ever heard about upon my arrival in this great city and I was determined to discover why.
I knew that it was another magnificent urban green space design by Frederick Olmsted of Central Park fame and that it offers spectacular views of the city skyline. I apparently had a lot to learn about our own “backyard”.
Majestically rising up in the middle of the city, Mount Royal is a symbol of our heritage, our geography, our inspiration. A four-season playground for all, it is considered to be the “lungs of the city”. Green, clean and refreshing, it’s home to a wide range of flora and fauna. The urban wildlife (a.k.a. Montrealers) is abundant and active all year round in a host of recreational pursuits: jogging, cycling, blading, skating, skiing, and tobogganing—hey, it’s a mountain—not to forget bird watching, walking Rover, picnicking and soaking up some rays.
The Belvedere Kondiaronk lookout has witnessed more than one eager suitor down on one knee to pop “the” question with a breathtaking vista of the city as a romantic backdrop. Two gorgeous hillside cemeteries are ideal for tranquil promenades and the striking Saint Joseph’s Oratory adorns Mount Royal’s northern slope.
The local natives really get restless on summer Sundays at the tribal tam-tams for a spontaneous and peaceful celebration of life, love, or whatever tickles you that day. Call the gang and go—that’s how it’s been organized for years.
