Whenever we need a break from the urban hustle and bustle, we head straight for the Pôle des Rapides.
Call it a 21-km long protected recreational park, call it a historical site, call it a little slice of R&R heaven—whatever the moniker, it’s a great green getaway just minutes from downtown that offers a wealth of recreational opportunities and a ton of fun.
Countless Montréalers have spent many a happy hour on the numerous multi-purpose trails that stretch from the banks of the St. Lawrence up to the Lachine Canal, rollerblading or cycling along with joggers, dog walkers, or families out for a stroll. Excursions nearly always include a stop at the open-air Atwater Market, which is conveniently located just off the bike path and home to the most incredible assortment of mouth-watering delicacies, from farm-fresh meats and cheeses to the best baguette you have ever tasted.
With the Lachine Canal at its heart and Québec’s two largest marinas located at either end, it goes without saying that the Pôle des Rapides is a water-sport destination par excellence. Kayak or raft through the Lachine Rapids, sail across Lac Saint-Louis or enjoy a tranquil cruise across or through the locks of the Lachine Canal.
For year-round outdoor activities, you can’t beat the 97-hectare Angrignon Park with its bird sanctuary, Angrignon Farm (a real hit with the kiddies), picnic areas, majestic trees and nature trails.
Beautiful scenery, lively neighbourhoods, historic sites and countless sporting and cultural activities are scattered throughout this active borough. Nature lovers and water buffs all congregate here for fun and good times.
