It could be said that bikes are to Montréal what gondolas are to Venice. Just ask the people at the popular American magazine Bicycling which, in 2007, voted us one of the top international cities to visit by bike. Or ask the hundreds of Montrealers who, when warm weather hits, hop on the saddle and fly.

With the April 2009 arrival of BIXI–which concept has been awarded the Energy & Sustainability top Edison award recognising the best innovations of the year–, Montréal’s bike bragging rights just grew exponentially.

BIXI (the name is a hybrid of the first two letters of “bicycle” and the last two letters of “taxi”) is low-cost and it’s easy-to-use, and makes gas-guzzling modes of urban transportation seem so very passé. To get your BIXI fix, just go to one of the 300 stations across the city, pedal what you can manage for the day, and bring it back when you are finished.

So, there you have it: economical, ecological and it’ll get you to your destination in two shakes.
