Published on September 1, 2009 - Browsing stands filled with fruits and vegetables plucked fresh from orchards and fields is always a Montréal favourite.

The minute you round the corner to Little Italy’s bustling Jean-Talon Market, your nose will be filled with the aromas of grilled merguez sausage, piping-hot crêpes and freshly-picked produce. This popular year-round market features a staggering number of fruit and vegetable stalls as well as boutiques selling spices, oils, cheese and deli meats, and regional delicacies from Québec.

Southwest of downtown, on the shores of the Lachine Canal, the Art-Déco Atwater Market welcomes producers and merchants year-round. Crowds come here for its fragrant exterior stalls and small indoor businesses, excellent meats, fresh fish and seafood as well as breads and pastries.

The Maisonneuve Market is housed in a beautiful beaux-arts-style building in the city’s Hochelaga Maisonneuve neighbourhood to the east. Though smaller in size, it has been attracting a growing clientele with its market-fresh offerings and specialty food boutiques. From August to October, it also features “Samedis Bio” (Organic Saturdays), offering patrons health-conscious harvests.

The smallest but oldest of Montréal’s four public markets, the Lachine Market offers a more intimate browsing experience. Here you can buy cheeses and breads or linger over a café au lait, while the always abundant fruit and vegetable stands spill onto the street come summer.

Montréal also boasts many excellent neighbourhood markets often a stone’s throw from the métro.
