Pirates, Privateers and Freebooters - Pavillon John Rackham

Hit the high seas this spring with the Pointe-à-Callière Museum’s brand-new Pirates, Privateers and Freebooters, an exhibition devoted to the seafaring adventurers from the 16th to 19th centuries, which will run from May 20, 2009 to January 3, 2010.

While we tend to look disparagingly on these pillagers and plunderers and treasure-chest carriers, some were on the right side of the law and sailed with the King’s or Governor’s approval to attack enemies in wartime.

There will be some space saved for the big-name pirates of the day (Blackbeard, Sir Francis Drake and – who knew? –Canadian pirates) as well as objects ranging from sabres to seachests to navigational instruments. But the big fun will come in the shape of a life-size pirate ship that’s being built in the Museum’s temporary exhibition room.

Round up the lads and lasses and take yer landlubbin’ legs on deck for a tour of the authentic kitchen, crew’s and surgeon’s quarters, armoury, gibbet and captain’s cabin. Aye, matey
