Published on March 16, 2009 - At first glance, hockey and classical music might seem like an odd pairing. However, the year 2009 marks the birth of two institutions proudly revered by Montrealers: the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and the Montréal Canadiens, the city’s national hockey team (and the oldest active hockey team in history).

The first turns 75 this spring, the second celebrates its 100th birthday. And true to their party-throwing reputation, Montrealers are putting the final touches on a festive bash that will unite these two world-class ambassadors of sports and music.

The OSM will be performing Beethoven’s magisterial Ode to Joy for this unique benefit evening. Proceeds from the evening will go toward helping the OSM achieve greater international visibility.

In addition to this great musical work, the orchestra will also perform Les Glorieux, a hymn to the Canadiens expressly created by François Dompierre and Georges-Hébert Germain to mark 100 seasons with the “Habs”, Montréal’s cherished hometown team.
