Vive Sainte-Catherine libre! A section of Montréal’s famous street in the Village goes car-free for the summer.
Officially launched on June 20, the Aire Libres project in Montréal’s Village turns a major section of Sainte-Catherine Street, between Berri and Papineau, into a giant pedestrian zone right up until September 1. Anyone and everyone is invited to stroll this effervescent strip of one of the city’s most popular neighbourhoods, and check out the outdoor kiosks set up by local merchants as well as the brand-new terraces built outside the numerous cafés, bars and restaurants.
A combination eco experiment, art project and business venture, Aires libres also offers other features that are off the beaten path. Besides the great shopping and dining, you’ll want to check out the more than 80 metal structures covered in vegetation, catch a Kino movie screening, or take a zany bike tour led by hilarious drag queen, Tracy Trash.
