April 17, 2013 - Considering Montréalers’ fervour for all things culinary, it isn’t a stretch to believe that we are passionate about our beverages, too. Whether it be a local microbrewery beer or a rare vintage, what’s in our glass is as important as what’s on our plate.

The Barley
Looking to wet your whistle? You’re in the right place – according to USA Today, Montréal ranks among the top 10 cities for beer in the world. Neighbourhood microbreweries that create and brew onsite are a particular favourite when it comes time for happy hour, or a 5 à 7.

The 2.3 km (1.3 mile) Montréal Brewpub – Beer Tour (by Local Montréal Tours) gives you a chance to stretch your legs between pints at three craft breweries in some of Montréal’s liveliest neighbourhoods.

As if having local beer flowing wasn’t enough, in June Montréal invites the world’s brewers to pour a pint or two at Canada’s largest beer festival, Festival Mondial de la Bière, a celebration of beer, cider and good eats.

The Grape
The Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) is a government corporation that features some of the best wines and alcoholic beverages in the world. As a rule, they are conveniently located near Montréal’s 292 BYOW – Bring Your Own Wine – restaurants, which invite you to bring your own bottle to enjoy with your meal.

Each November, Montréal hosts La Grande Dégustation, an annual convention that brings some 250 vintners, distillers and brewers from around the world and invites patrons to sample and stock up. Each edition features a country, a vintage and a spirit.

Santé!
