Leonard Cohen Artworks

March 1, 2010 – We all know Leonard Cohen for the power of his prose, but how many of us knew he’s been drawing his whole life too?

In fact, Cohen has been sketching ever since his career’s very beginnings, constantly channeling his boundless creativity. For the first time in Montréal, the artworks of this prodigious poet, novelist and singer-songwriter will be on display at the Galerie Lounge TD until May 9, 2010.

The unassuming Cohen claims that he just “decorates his notebooks” but a peek at the simple yet evocative strokes attests to his talent and sense of humour. The 75 pictures, many annotated, bring the viewer a tiny bit closer to the inner sanctum of this great artist and former Zen monk, whose powerful reflections on life continue to resonate with people around the world.

Cohen never intended for his drawings—accumulated over the course of some 40 odd years— to be displayed, but rather created them out of sheer pleasure. For fans of this Montréal icon, the pleasure of viewing this one-of-a-kind exhibition will be all theirs.

Admission to the exhibition is free.
