Opéra de Montréal announces its 2009-2010 season

Published on October 1st, 2009 – France, Italy, and Austria take centre stage at Place des Arts as their famous “sons”– renowned composers Massenet, Puccini, Verdi, Leoncallo and Mozart – dominate the bill for the Opéra de Montréal’s 2009-2010 season. This Montréal institution will celebrate its 30th anniversary in style, featuring an extraordinary program of opera’s most talented artists from around the world:  Marc Hervieux, Marie-Josée Lord, Étienne Dupuis, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Karina Gauvin, and Pascal Charbonneau will join the great voices of John Tessier, Aline Kutan, Nicola Beller-Carbone, Alberto Gazale and the celebrated Hiromi Omura.

Opening the 2009/2010 season will be a double-bill, I Pagliacci/Gianni Schicchi, two universal favourites by masters Leoncallo and Puccini respectively. Next, Mozart will brighten November gray with The Magic Flute, followed by Puccini’s passionate Tosca to warm audiences in January and February. The arrival of spring will bring Verdi’s Simon Boccanegrafor the first time to Montréal and then Massenet’s Cendrillon featuring a cast completely comprised of singers from Québec.

For its part, the Atelier lyrique also has many surprises in store. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Atelier lyrique will present Nelligan, a romantic opera by André Gagnon and Michel Tremblay.
