June 22, 2016 — Each year in early autumn, fans and critics of new music and art drop everything and flock to discover new cultural ground. Only days later do they return to their routines, exhausted but gorged with avant-garde creations. Their promised land: the POP Montreal international music festival.

Launched in 2002, POP Montreal is now a leading light of Montréal’s festival circuit. As with any event, it measures its calibre by the big names who’ve played it: Thurston Moore, Shamir, Will Butler, Vieux Farka Touré, Poirier, TheBesnard Lakes, The Barr Brothers, Braids, Cœur de Pirate, Motorhead, The Orb, and more. In five days, the festival presents nearly 600 artists for more than 40,000 delirious spectators every year.

Like any festival worth its salt, POP Montreal doesn’t limit itself to live music; instead, it’s had kids. FilmPop, a mini-festival of music-themed films, is in its creators’ words, “where movies and music make out in the dark.” ArtPop, for its part, offers intellectual stimulation, with exhibitions, stage designs, and discussions on art. Finally, the lively KidsPop offers instrument-making workshops, disguises, and origami. The range of events on offer are all part of cementing Montréal as an international cultural metropolis.
