Antique-ing on Amherst (in Montréal's Gay Village)

Published on May 14, 2009 - Once upon a time, between Ontario Street and Sainte-Catherine Street, there lived a charming artery named in honour of the first British governor-general of New France. Lore today says this trendy street teems with shops that are the pride of Village residents. Welcome to Amherst Street, ladies and gents.

Here, a stroll past shop windows reveals a smorgasbord of must-have chic and retro kitsch pulled from the 1950s to 70s. From lava lamps to Danish tables with a detour through art deco, treasures are begging to be unearthed at places like Jack's, Cité Deco, Sputnik and Seconde Chance.

And though this area is rooted in history, it’s got a foot just as firmly planted in tomorrow’s trends. Lending clout to Montréal’s moniker as City of Design are places like art gallery-boutique Headquarters and Dinh Bà Design, where art flirts with fashion, or the Galerie Dentaire, a dentist’s office that doubles as art space. No matter where you wander, creations by our local artists and designers never cease to turn heads.

It’s a foodie’s dream come true, a melting pot of creativity and experimentation. At the upscale Duel, chef-owners Laurent Godbout and David Biron go head to head in a mouth-watering culinary combat, while tastes of Mexico are teased out with the loving attention at restaurant-boutique Chipotle & Jalapeno. Or, if your taste buds crave refined Mediterranean cuisine, the elegant Ella Grill is always a sure bet.

When day turns to dark, creatures of the night flock to Gotha Lounge for cocktails followed by a night on the town (between men, women or both) at the popular Le Parking nightclub. And now, ladies and gents, over to you to see if Amherst lives up to its legendary reputation…
