The 14th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival kicks off in Montréal

Montréal, June 29, 2010 – On July 8, the 14th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival will kick off for another fabulous celebration of cinematographic excellence. Each year since its inception in 1996, this popular event – the largest and most important presentation of genre film in North America – has drawn cinephiles from around the world to revel in the best of all film genres, including fantasia, mystery, historical, action, animation, suspense and even science-fiction.

A very hymn to genre films and testament to Montréal’s dynamic cultural scene, each passing edition of this festival attracts some 80 000 festival-goers ready to be entertained, moved and amazed by a unique program of innovative, audacious, and even eccentric work hailing from over twenty countries.

“Montréal has a long-standing love affair with the cinema,” highlights the Honourable Charles Lapointe, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal, “Our city is, in fact, host to several festivals dedicated to the ‘Seventh Art’, which absolutely confirms the passion, open-mindedness and the thirst for knowledge of a destination always at the forefront of innovation and resolutely open to the world. Fantasia is included in the important list of events whose excellence and program diversity showcase Montréal’s reputation throughout the world as the North American centre for art and culture,” he concludes.

The Fantasia International Film Festival has been a resounding success since the very beginning, and has only increased in popularity since. Over the last 14 years, the accolades – as much on the international scale as here at home – have poured in for this festive event so dear to the heart of Montrealers and thousands of film enthusiasts around the world.
