Yo dude, ready to grab your board and hang ten on a totally rad wave?

OK, so the surfer lingo might be a bit overdone, but you’ll definitely get into it once you catch a ride on Big Joe, known as one of the world’s tallest standing waves. What’s a standing wave, you ask? Well, think of it as a wave that stays put and never peters out. That means that on Big Joe, surf’s up—permanently.

Surfers, kayakers and other pleasure boaters can put their skills to the test a mere stone’s throw from Montreal’s shores, catching a gorgeous view of the downtown skyline while they manoeuvre the bouncy waters of the Lachine Rapids—part of the mighty St. Lawrence River. Beginners may want to start off on Big Joe’s little brother, a nearby stationery wave called Pyramid. Either way, this whirring whirlpool is guaranteed to lift both your body and your spirits. No wonder that across the Northeast and beyond, these standing waves never fail to get a standing ovation.
