Published on August 31, 2009 – To get a good look at Montréal and discover why the city is what it is and how it got there, then a stop at the Centre d’histoire de Montréal – winner of a Grand Prix du Tourisme Québecois 2009 in the category of Tourist Attractions (less than 100,000 visitors) - is a must.

Located in the heart of Old Montréal, birthplace to North America’s first colony in 1642, this museum handily displays Montréal’s multiple identities in a recently-renovated historic firehouse of unusual Flemish architecture.  Spanning three floors, the numerous permanent and temporary exhibits depict the many triumphs and growing pains of this mighty metropolis throughout its development.

Until March 13, 2011, the Centre d’histoire de Montréal, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, presents the ingenious “Made in Montréal?” exhibit that features selected popular items from its 4 000+ collection that will have you saying, “Really?  That was made in Montréal?”  From Dow beer to Catelli pasta to Steinberg grocery stores to Peg Top cigars, you will discover the many household names and products that were ‘born’ in Montréal.

A marvelous, off-the-beaten-track way to experience Montréal.
