Published on March 31, 2010 – For a second consecutive year, the Port of Montréal received the Best Turnaround Port Operations award for the excellence of its cruise infrastructures from Dream World Cruise Destinations Magazine. It shares this prestigious distinction with eight other ports around the globe.
The port was evaluated according the excellence of their infrastructures, including berths and terminal or passenger handling building and the quality of their passenger and ship services, such as security, customs, baggage handling, cleaning, supplying and stevedoring.
The Port of Montréal also received the 2009 Best Turnaround Destination award which
recognizes the cruise destinations that offer passengers a superior quality in excellent transfer service to airports and train stations, a broad array of hotels and wide-ranging tourism appeal. Four other ports around the world also received this award.
The Port of Montréal is one of the world’s largest inland ports, a leader among North Atlantic container ports and the first and largest port in eastern Canada. It is situated on the St. Lawrence River, 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean, and offers the shortest and most direct route to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. It is equally the gateway, year-round, to the vast markets of Central Canada and the U.S. Midwest and Northeast.
In addition to being an important trans-shipment centre where various kinds of merchandise is handled, the Port of Montréal it is also a passenger port, welcoming domestic and international cruises during the May to October season. In 2009, 47,534 cruise passengers transited through the Port.
