Published on August 31, 2009 – This past June, the Port of Montréal received the 2008 Best Turnaround Port Operations Award for the quality of its cruise passenger and ship services from Dream World Cruise Destinations Magazine. It shares this prestigious distinction with eight other ports around the globe.

A total of 231 ports and destinations were in competition for the magazine’s coveted award, and were evaluated according the excellence of their infrastructures, including berths and terminal or passenger handling building and the quality of their passenger and ship services, such as security, customs, baggage handling, cleaning, supplying and stevedoring.

The Port of Montréal is one of the world’s largest inland ports, a leader among North Atlantic container ports and the first and largest port in eastern Canada. It is situated on the St. Lawrence River, 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean, and offers the shortest and most direct route to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. It is equally the gateway, year-round, to the vast markets of Central Canada and the U.S. Midwest and Northeast.

In addition to being an important trans-shipment centre where various kinds of merchandise is handled, the Port of Montréal it is also a passenger port, welcoming domestic and international cruises during the May to October season. In 2008, over 39,500 cruise passengers transited through the Port.
