Sidewalk sales in Montréal

May 3, 2010 – Close your eyes and inhale. The air wafts with the aroma of unbeatable bargains, savoury grilled chicken and the sweet notes of coconut suntan oil. That, people, is the smell of a Montréal sidewalk sale. The time of the year when the sun blazes high in the sky, when asphalt turns to open mart, when folding tables and outdoor racks reveal treasures untold. And Montrealers know a thing or two about the art of combining bargain hunting with hanging out and enjoying the summer vibe, day or night. Here’s a few ventes de trottoir worth checking out.

Saint-Laurent Boulevard, a.k.a. The Main: Where else but on this very iconic Montréal strip to throw a sidewalk-sale-cum-beach party? Formerly known as “Main Madness”, the new event has recently been christened Club Main, and takes place from June 17 to 20. Expect tons of tables of marked-down goodies, DJs, massage chairs (for the shopping-weary), beach volleyball, palm trees, people aplenty, as well as food and drinks to tickle your tummy. And, when day turns to dark, bargain hunting gives way to beach partying, so be sure to throw on your Maui Jims and splashiest shorts and get ready to limbo.

Late summer, the Main’s back at it again with the second edition of the Madness sale, now called Mix’Arts, which runs from August 26 to 29. The deals (from over 300 merchants!) will be ubiquitous, but this time Saint-Laurent will be styled after a street circus, replete with dance, sculpture, music, movies and more. Sandals, not stilts, required.

Lively Sainte-Catherine Street, at the heart of downtown, becomes a 2-km-long bargain-hunting bonanza on July 17 and 18. Join shoppers and strollers as they mosey along this bustling thoroughfare, Canada’s largest open-air commercial fair, at the height of summer. A great way to catch some rays, unearth treasures and feel the Montréal pulse.

The Plateau is a hotspot any time of the year, but Mont-Royal Avenue is the destination for both trend-seekers and bargain hunters two times around, from June 10 to 13 and from September 3 to 5. Don’t miss these great opportunities to scope out and scoop up to-die-for discounts while you people-watch!
