August 3, 2012 – Recognized by the Grands Prix du tourisme québécois 2012 for its sustainable events, the Palais des congrès de Montréal has been actively meeting the eco-responsibility challenge for well over a decade.

Environmental certifications and awards
It obtained BOMA BESt (Building Environmental Standards) certification in 2005, establishing itself among the best convention centres in Canada to receive such accreditation, and went on to reach level three of this certification in 2009. BOMA BESt is the Canadian industry standard for commercial building sustainability certification, which is based on the internationally recognized and accepted Green Globes™ environmental assessment platform.

In 2006, the Palais des congrès was honoured by the Association québécoise de la maîtrise de l’énergie with an Énergia award in the “Recommissioning” category. In 2008, it joined Hydro-Québec’s ÉcolectriqueNetwork that includes large companies recognized for their leadership and exceptional performance when it comes to energy efficiency.

Sustainability and community involvement
The Palais des congrès offers numerous advantages for hosting “green” events: its ideal location between the downtown core and Old Montréal makes for easy access by foot, public transit or shuttle service. Furthermore, its level three BOMA BESt certification obtained in 2009 provides the Palais des congrès with global credibility for environmental performance and energy efficiency.

The Palais des congrès actively participates in the tourist industry’s Green Committee headed by Tourisme Montréal, and adheres to the City of Montréal’s Community Sustainable Development Plan 2012-2015. What’s more, the Palais is surrounded by a significant group of partners who are, in their own right, recognized for their expertise in matters of sustainable development. Together, they contribute to reducing the ecological footprint of major conventions, many of which have already received Responsible Event Management certification according to the standard adopted by the Bureau de normalisation de Québec (BNQ 9700-253). As such, the Palais offers a wide range of eco-responsible packages that not only allows event organizers to target precise sustainability objectives for their event, but also provides expert support and assistance throughout the entire process.

Truly a leader in urban agriculture with its rooftop garden, the Palais des congrès initiated its Culti-Vert project for a second edition this summer. Medicinal plants, heirloom vegetables and flowers flourish in rooftop containers alongside hives of bees to promote pollination and produce urban honey. The harvest of these organic vegetables, fruit and herbs is shared between project partner restaurants and caterers, with a portion donated to local community organizations.
The general public can tour Culti-Vert as part of the Balade sur les toits event organized by UQAM Cœur des sciences. Admission is free upon reservation.
