In Montréal, art clearly thrives on roads less travelled. Three of the city’s cultural institutions have indeed chosen hard rock music as the theme for their exhibitions. Why not seize the moment and treat yourself to a Hard Rock’n’Art weekend in Montréal!
For starters, one of three places: MBCO, a restaurant/bakery on Stanley, which serves up a variety of flavourful omelettes and Viennese pastries; Café Vasco da Gama, on Peel, noted for its bagels, croque-matin and Portuguese-style tosta mixta; or, Anton & James, a New York-style café on Stanley, which features a variety of morning delights and freshly baked breads.
Then it’s off to the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts for the Warhol Live exhibition which explores the role played by music in the signature works of artist Andy Warhol – from Elvis to Marilyn, and from Grace Jones to Mick Jagger.
To remain in the groove, make your way over to Hard Rock Café on Crescent and indulge in chicken wings, nachos and potato skins served up against a backdrop of retro rock.
Batteries recharged, the moment has come to rise to the challenge of a perilous mission at Laser Quest where you must combat the enemy as you make your way through a maze of corridors, laser pistol in hand.
Mission accomplished, set your sights on the Musée d’art contemporain. The exhibition, entitled Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock’n’Roll since 1967, features over a hundred different works which expose the ties between avant-garde art and the rock music of the past forty years.
You will then want to head east to Saint-Laurent Boulevard and check out Screaming Eagle’s vast selection of leather jackets, boots and motorcycle accessories.
Next, La Paryse on Ontario. The relaxed, people-friendly atmosphere of this American-style snack bar is certain to delight as is the variety of mouth-watering hamburgers and fries.
To top off the evening, treat yourself to an unforgettable, typically Montréal-style experience at Les Foufounes électriques. A local favourite for 25 years now, this celebrated, three-story venue boasts a terrace, dance floor, exhibition space and entertainment halls, but is best known for its prized concert lineup which spans the full spectrum from pop, punk and heavy metal to techno and alternative.
