Montréal’s Special Local Culinary Touch

February 17, 2016 - To get a taste for Montréal, you have to dig right in, starting with some of the city’s signature eats.

Montréal’s famous smoked meat
A Montréal specialty, smoked meat is a tried and true favourite with locals and visitors alike. The real deal can be found at  Schwartz’s Jewish deli, a longstanding institution that always draws a hungry crowd. Its famous sandwich served on rye bread with an enormous dill pickle on the side seduces one and all with the delicate mix of herbs and spices that give smoked meat its irresistible and unique taste.

Montréal’s legendary bagel
Brought over by Jewish immigrants from Central Europe over half a century ago, the Montréal bagel boasts a slightly sweeter taste than its New York cousin thanks to wood ovens, eggs in the batter and the baker’s expert touch.

Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, St-Viateur Bagel and Fairmount Bagel in Montréal’s Mile-End neighbourhood offer a selection of fresh-from-the-oven bagels so tantalizing, it would make even the freshest of croissants turn green with envy.

Maple syrup and other delicacies
A springtime culinary staple, this syrup sweetens a variety of treats and enhances even the most sophisticated of recipes.

The traditional sugar shack fare attracts thousands of visitors each year; however, one needn’t wait ‘til spring to enjoy syrup and its numerous derivatives. Numerous spots, rom Canadian Maple Delights in Old Montréal to the public markets to the Sucrerie de la Montagne in Rigaud, offer an array of deliciously sugary local products all year round.

Down-home comfort food
When it comes to comfort food, Poutine is the Holy Trinity: fries smothered in scalding hot gravy and topped with melting cheese curds, with various condiments added to taste.

Other deeply-rooted traditional favs include Shepherd’s Pie (pâté chinois) and Poor Man’s Pudding (pouding chomeur), both of which are simply to die for at  Restaurant Mâche that serves up Quebec comfort food at its best!
