May 24, 2010 – Just in time to celebrate the Cirque du Soleil’s latest summer blockbuster, TOTEM, the McCord Museum is staging a circus of their own: an exhibition of out-of-this-world Cirque costumes, rarely seen outside the Grand Chapiteau (Big Top)!
The performance artistry of Cirque du Soleil is world renowned, however, what is always in the spotlight, but not always as recognized, is the artistry of couture involved in the elaborate costumes worn by the performers. As the dream unfolds before your very eyes, it was woven long before by a team of expert design professionals.
From May 26, 2010 to January 8, 2011, the exhibition Dream Weavers – Costumes by Cirque du Soleil will present over a quarter of a century of costume innovation and imagination. Discover the work of legendary designers and artisans through the display of costume components, photographs, audio and video presentations.
Cirque du Soleil costumes are an integral part of the overall Cirque experience; the costumes must perform as brilliantly as the artists themselves. Such garments demand performance, technicality, comfort and imagination… and it’s all here for you to see, up close!
