Impassioned, imaginative, fundamentally original in its integration of popular and Gypsy musics, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” stands as a monument of the genre, its orchestral forces the most imposing ever assembled to that point in a symphony. Violinist Viviane Hagner will perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Opening the program, Messagesquisse, for seven cellos, commissioned by Mstislav Rostropovitch for the seventieth birthday of Swiss conductor and patron Paul Sacher.
