Premiered in 1904 under the direction of the composer, Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is dedicated to his wife Alma, his “faithful, brave companion on every road.” Its famous Adagietto (used by Visconti, among others, in his film Death in Venice) is a true love song without words to Alma. On the same program, the virtually unlimited expressiveness of Anne‑Sophie Mutter conveys the intensity and lyricism of two recent works written for the violinist, which will almost certainly become classics of the solo violin repertoire.
