The Sixth Symphony surpasses in boldness everything that Mahler had produced until then, perhaps because the composer felt himself to be the instrument of a force greater than himself, mysterious, tragic, implacable. In the same period, a twenty-year-old Webern wrote Im Sommerwind, an opulent orchestral painting that reflects the influence of Wagner. Emanuel Ax, meanwhile, regarded as one of the finest pianists of our time, will perform Haydn’s elegant Concerto in D major, a summit of Viennese classicism.
