Refined poetry and subtle evocations are found in Claude Debussy’s three symphonic sketches entitled La Mer, in which he drew from the orchestra hitherto unknown sonorities. As with his ballet score Jeux eight years later, commentators of the time described the music in terms of colors, impressions and shades of light. Kent Nagano conducts these two shimmering scores along with Stravinsky’s witty Jeu de cartes and Mozart’s brilliant Haffner Symphony.
