The OSM is performing L’Enfance du Christ for the first time under the direction of Kent Nagano, along with some of the most beautiful Canadian voices as well as the OSM Chorus. One of France’s most illustrious composers, Hector Berlioz is today best known for his dramatic legend La Damnation de Faust, his sublime art songs and the extremely famous Symphonie fantastique. In 1854 he wrote L’Enfance du Christ (The Childhood of Christ), a brilliant orchestral and choral score that achieved immediate success with audiences and critics alike. One of the most powerful oratorios of the romantic period, the work recounts the flight to Egypt of Joseph, Mary and Jesus under threat from King Herod.
