Nothing could be simpler than the motif on which the opening movement of Beethoven’s Fifth is based. Yet, two centuries after its first performance, we continue to be amazed by the skill with which the composer handles this fragmentary material and by how he created one of the most powerful movements in the symphonic repertory. Just how he accomplished this is the subject of Beyond the ScoreTM, a concept devised by the Chicago Symphony. This lively format invites you to enter the world of symphonic music in a way so as to better understand how it is put together. The first part of the program consists of a dramatized narration with projections on a giant screen; the second part, a complete performance of the music.
