César Franck’s musical testament, the Symphony in D minor remains the most developed and successful example of the cyclical form of writing so dear to its creator. Jean-François Rivest, former OSM conductor in residence and current artistic director of the Orford Arts Centre, reinterprets this essential work in the French orchestral repertoire. The first-prize winner of the OSM Standard Life Competition, this year devoted to piano and percussion, will be guest soloist on the program, which is completed by Paul Dukas’s masterpiece, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a symphonic scherzo made famous by the Disney film Fantasia.
