The OSM’s first assistant conductor, Stéphane Laforest, offers a musical journey to three continents. He will lead the Orchestra in Borodin’s Symphony No. 2, contemporaneous with his renowned opera, Prince Igor. This is the more popular of the Russian composer’s symphonies and considered the more representative of his esthetic, and inspired by the Russian medieval period. Theodore Baskin meanwhile will premiere a work for oboe and orchestra by Canadian composer José Evangelista. Opening the program, Koechlin’s Bandar-Log (Scherzo des singes), filled with humor and daring, a tip of the hat to the world of Kipling’s Jungle Books.
