The majority having been notarized in La Rochelle some 400 years ago, employment contracts represent, in most cases, the one and only trace of an emigrant’s departure for the New World as well as proof of their existence in France. It is in honour of these men, women and children that these artefacts have crossed the Atlantic four centuries later. Symbol of the Francophone presence in North America as well as the former capital city of Canada, Acadia and Louisiana, Québec City welcomes, for the first time, original documents of its European ancestors.
