Invited by Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, the National Ballet of China is presenting Raise the Red Lantern, a brilliant adaptation of Zhang Yimou’s acclaimed movie of the same name. The filmmaker also wrote the libretto, designed the lighting and signed the stage direction of the ballet. This passionate drama is set in the warlord era of 1920s China. In spectacular sets and sumptuous costumes, some seventy dancers combine classical ballet, traditional dance, acrobatics and mime in a tragic tale of love, jealousy, and death. A perfect fusion of Western classical ballet and Eastern culture.
